ABOUT VIS & BIŠEVO
Vis Island is the furthest open-sea island away from the Dalmatian coast, just 60 miles from Italy! Even during the summer Vis is still an idyllic off-the-beaten-path island, unlike more famous Hvar. The main reason for this is that Vis cannot be experienced in a single day taking ferry back and forth and has only a very small number of hotel beds. So instead of being overrun with day trippers, it’s mainly visited either by yachtsmen or people who come here every year - mainland Croatians who have family houses here or visitors who take time to be inspired by the story of Vis by spending several days or weeks here.
Inhabited since the Neolithic times, the known history of Vis began in the 4thC BC with the Greeks from Siracusa, who created an island stronghold so powerful that it ruled the Dalmatian coast for almost 300 years. The Greeks called this island fortress Issa, which over many centuries evolved into Vis. After the Roman conquest, this open sea island was ruled by a succession of empires, the most notable of which was Venice, whose influence here can still be seen in some marvelous public and private buildings. But today Vis is mostly remembered as where Marshall Tito and his partisans built a garrison to harass the Germans and Italians in WW2. After the war, the island was a “closed” military base. Although the island’s flourishing fishing, wine-making and agricultural tradition was almost lost, nature here was allowed to run wild, preserving some of the best beaches and flora and fauna in the Mediterranean. Vis has only been “reopened”
since 1990, yet with fewer tourists in comparison to other attractive islands and a year-round population of just 3,500, it remains a special place cherished by everyone willing enough to get here and discover its many treasures, especially out of the season’s peak.
Bisevo has been inhabited ever since prehistoric times and has also had an intriguing history integrated with its particular natural beauties of which the most famous is the Blue cave.
Our Vis Island Discovery averages about 10 NM of paddling per day, so you need to be reasonably fit and have previous kayaking experience. But discovering Vis is not just about navigating around its beautiful shores and beaches; it’s about the people we will meet, the food, the wine, the ever-present beauty of Vis that will captivate you to make this journey an indelible memory.
ITINERARY
DAY 1
Meeting with your guide in Split at the ferry harbor is the first step. Then we take ferry to Vis and get ready for our first paddle out of the deep bay of Vis town to a small protected bay of Stoncica. There’s a wonderful, small restaurant here, where if you want, you can enjoy your first Vis island fish!
From Stoncica we continue past the important lighthouse in these waters and it’s already here that you feel there is something special about this island. Following the east coast and couple of coves later we arrive to Budikovac lagoon, one of most beautiful spots on our route preferred by sailors and day-trippers. Enjoy a swim and snorkeling in the turquoise waters of this protected lagoon. Before the sun sets, we will paddle to Rukavac bay where we will have dinner in a local restaurant and spend the night in local homes. Accommodation is double rooms.
DAY 2
Big day! From Rukavac we will continue exploring the intriguing south coast of Vis, first visiting the beautiful Green Cave on Ravnik island. Eons of ocean waves created this unique cave with two entrances. The ethereal light that bathes the interior walls is the result of sunlight streaming through an opening in the cave’s ceiling reflecting colors from the pool of sea water inside. Pummeled by strong south winds and waves during the winter and being so far into the sea, Vis’ southern coastline and carved limestone cliffs are amazing. After the break we will head on finding coves, admiring grottos, strange-looking shapes of rocks and of course we’ll find a beach for another break before our strokes take us past Stupisce horn across the open stretch of water to Bisevo island. The most known thing about Bisevo is the mythical Blue cave and with favorable conditions we will enter it. Since its magic is owed to sunlight it will most probably be the next day so we’ll first get our accommodation, have dinner and enjoy the remains of the day (over Plavac – local red wine-).
DAY 3
Another big day will start (pomalo) easily and after breakfast it’s time to explore more of the island by entering its caves; there’s the Blue one and there’s the Bear’s one…it’s better to see them for real then to read about them so we’ll do that after which we’ll circumnavigate the island and after a stop in a cove head back to the mother island of Vis into the big bay of Komiza to finally land there in this unique fishermen's town. Local people are considered among the most experienced men of sea supporting themselves and their families over the course of centuries and developing and innovating fishing industry as far as in Spain or the US.
You are welcome to visit a small Fishermen's Museum dedicated to Komiza's fishermen, their tools and boats.
After dinner in a local restaurant, we’ll spend night in a local home in Komiza.
DAY 4
Rest or spare day – Vis is a remote island and winds can sometimes be too strong for enjoyable kayaking so we have decided to have a spare day in case it happens. And if everything goes as planned you’ll get an extra day to discover better this enchanting part of the Mediterranean. If a lazy day isn’t an option for you we’ll suggest different ways to experience more such as military tour or few great inland taverns – Vis has been on a gastronomical and wine list for many years and would be perhaps shame not to check it better. Private accommodation in Komiza.
DAY 5
Today is our final day of paddling which will bring us back to Vis town. We’ll leave Komiza after breakfast and a cup of coffee on a local square or promenade in the morning and once we’ve left the bay, start riding along the north side of the island. Nobody knows for sure how many ships loaded with amphorae carrying precious content of wine and olive oil hit the bottom due to heavy storms in the area. We’ll ride underneath high cliffs that would have offered outstanding viewpoint to the famous battle of Vis in 1866. when Austrian and Italian fleets confronted in the vicinity. Few pebble beaches later on, just before Vis town we’ll stop to check another protected bay that hosted submarine pen during the period of Yugoslavia. Despite the size of the pen since the water inside is absolutely still, you will be amazed to see how far you can move your kayak with just few strokes. Eventually passing by the little rock named Host that bears remembrance to another famous Battle of Lissa, - Vis, that took place between British and French fleets in these waters, we’ll enter the bay of Vis. It’s time we relax, enjoy the town, find a place to have dinner in and stay for the night in a double room at a local home.
DAY 6
We created this program to give you some time to enjoy Vis town and other parts of the island to explore on your own without kayaking. You can rent a scooter, hire a car, laze about in Vis Town, go for an extended walk and swim or just relax. Whichever you feel like doing we’ll provide you with our suggestions. In the afternoon we’ll take the ferry back to Split.

FAQ
HOW BIG ARE THE GROUPS?
Minimum 3, ideal up to 8, maximum number is 12 people.
WHAT ABOUT PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AND FITNESS LEVEL NEEDED FOR THE TOUR?
Previous kayaking experience is definitely welcome, but even more than that it’s important to possess a recreational level of physical fitness; you are facing 4 – 5 hours of paddling every day so it helps if you have done it before. On a windy day (it sometimes happen-) you must be ready to paddle harder and longer. Ability to swim is also required.
MEETING POINT?
We meet in Split either one day before the tour or in the harbor on the day of the tour – let us know when you are coming and we'll give you the meeting time/space coordinates. Alternatively if you are coming to Korcula we can meet there and have it as our starting or finish point.
HOW DOES IT START?
We take the ferry in Split port loaded with kayaks and gear, cross to Vis, unload everything in the port of Vis and soon get started. Of course, well before that we'll provide you with all other relevant info on what to bring and when (food provisions) best to do it.
KAYAKS AND GEAR?
We use both single and double sit-in sea kayaks equipped with rudder. We provide carbon paddles, life vests, spray skirts, drybags...
The choice of kayak is yours – if not experienced then we reccommend a double kayak due to its stability and comfort. Bear in mind that double kayaks are also known as “divorcers“ or “divorce makers“, so make sure you know well your kayaking partner-)
CAN THE CONDITIONS AND WEATHER AFFECT OUR TRIP?
Being a remote island the winds and waves can sometimes be challenging, especially for a beginner. Nevertheless we have done this trip quite a few times, actually the founder of the company was probaby the first to have done it commercially (within a former company) while others followed.
We monitor the conditions and based on our experience, knowledge of the area, weather forecast and opinion of locals choose the best options for our paddling itinerary.
The climate is a mild Mediterrannean which means there's a lot of sun, the season of sunny weather usually starts in May and it goes all the way till mid/end of October.
Second half of June, July, August and first half of September are rather hot (25°C – 35°C, 77°F - 95°F) with occasional rainfall.
CASH, CREDIT CARDS?
Always good to have some cash on you and you'll find ATMs in every mayor island town, while they'll be more scarse in smaller communities. There's still quite a few restaurants and bars on islands taking cash only so be prepared. Mayority of shops take credit cards.
DISCOUNT AVAILABLE?
Yes, for groups and depending on the time of the booking/season, feel free to ask and we'll get back to you.
THIS IS SUGGESSTED ITINERARY AND CAN BE CUSTOMISED UPON REQUEST.
