Dalmatian Jungle Trek
In the midst of the karsts environment there runs the Cetina river which has given life for centuries to these parts and nowadays, unlike its one-time inhabitants who knew all the hardships of past times, we are able to explore this secluded piece of heaven in form of a recreational hike revealing a different Dalmatia. Lush vegetation follows the flow almost jealously keeping its secrets away from the outside world – only few ever set out to discover old mills and bush trails, occasional meadows and few tiny beaches on foot. The nature here is still pretty wild due to absence of human presence for so long and although there are few settlements in its vicinity, yet it is no wonder to encounter animals or to come across old, and some really impressive dry-stone formations, abandoned in a search of better and easier existence, now claimed by the jungle.
We start the hike from higher ground and venture into the canyon; as roads give way to narrow paths taking you one moment closer to the water and the next bit away only to get back to it soon this is where the ambiance of the area embraces you. The trail itself is mostly downhill but there are few moderate sections of uphill as well. Another good news is that most of the hike is in shade!
The reward is not only to come to a place where you can finally sit to relax or to have some great food and cold drinks but it’s all the way – it is when you spot a wildlife or a tiny beach where depending on a personal preference and weather you can go for a refreshing swim – especially recommendable in the hottest summer days when for everyone else there’s no alternative to hot crowded beaches or air-conditioning.
At the end of the walking section there is deserved lunch and optionally time to explore the medieval town of Omis after which transfer takes you back to Split.
